ISLAND PARK — More than 200 people from Idaho and places as far away as Ottawa, Canada, Pennsylvania,  and Tennessee, crossed the finish line of the 13th annual All American Sawtelle Stampede on Saturday, July 4. Female participants out numbered males, and 5k was the length of choice for runners and walkers.

The Stampede is a fundraiser for the Island Park Area Chamber of Commerce, with profits from the event and a bike raffle going to a non-motorized trail project conceived by the Island Park Gem Community Team. The Gem Community Team was formed in 1997 by the chamber and the City of Island Park.

The Stampede is run on Caribou-Targhee National Forest trails, with beautiful views of Sawtelle Peak and Henry’s Lake Flat.

The celebrate Independence Day, participants are encouraged to wear patriotic colors and water stations were decorated with American Flags and other patriotic items. The event began with a prayer by The Little Church in the Pines Pastor Ben Moore, followed by a performance of the National Anthem by Erin Ginkel.

Connie Funkhouser, the event's director and Island Park Chamber of Commerce president, said the Little Church in the Pines group won the water station award, with an honorable mention going to the Bank of Idaho. Kailey Hambek, granddaughter of Pam Ruff of Island Park, won the most patriotic dress award.

Funkhouser said she was impressed by and grateful for the amazing spirit this year from the participants and the many volunteers from the community who worked at water stations, handled registration and timing, sold sponsorships that covered the back of the event's tee shirts, sponsored the kids event, took care of trail and staging area duties, and helped with announcements at the stage provided by Idaho Liquid Sound.
"It takes a huge amount of community spirit to pull off an event like this," Funkhouser said. "Thanks to all who helped."

Several family teams participated, and also the Red Hat Mountain Mommas, the City of Island Park, and Fremont County.
